Counselling and EFT with me

Working together: long term, short term, talk therapy and EFT.

I offer both psychotherapeutic counselling and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). Some people come to me wanting a space to explore things in depth over a longer period of time, whilst others are looking for a shorter-term, more focused approach using EFT. EFT can also be woven into longer-term counselling, so it doesn't have to be one or the other. Equally, if EFT doesn't feel right for you, there is no expectation that you use it at all. We can work together to find an approach that feels right for you, and you're very welcome to get in touch if you'd like to talk it through before booking.

As an integrative counsellor, I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches rather than working from a single model. Every person is different, so I aim to adapt my approach to you, your experiences and what you want from therapy.

Understanding yourself, creating choice.

Many of the patterns, beliefs and coping strategies we carry were developed for good reasons. They may have helped us to feel safe, or helped us cope with difficult experiences or navigate challenging relationships. Whilst they may once have protected us, they can sometimes limit us in the present and shape how we feel about ourselves, other people and our lives.

Counselling offers a space to understand how these patterns developed, what purpose they have served and whether they still serve us today. I find Transactional Analysis (TA) to be a particularly helpful framework for this, as it offers a compassionate way of exploring how our past experiences continue to influence us in the present. But it's up to you - if this framework doesn't feel right for you, we won't use it.

I believe that greater self-understanding creates greater freedom and choice. When we feel safe enough to explore ourselves honestly, we are often better able to decide what we want to hold on to, what we would like to let go of and how we want to move forward.

The Possibility of Change.

My degree is in neuroscience, and one of the things it taught me is that change is part of who we are. Our brains and our physiology are constantly adapting, learning and reorganising in response to our experiences.

That understanding sits at the heart of how I work. It supports my belief that no matter what we have been through, or how stuck we feel, change remains possible. Sometimes we just need the right support, enough safety and a little hope to help us move towards it.

My role is to provide a safe, stable and supportive space where we can do that together, opening up new possibilities for meaningful, lasting change.

How I Work

Feeling accepted and understood

I am interested in you and your story.

I believe that healing and change are most likely to happen when we feel accepted, understood and able to be ourselves. My aim is to offer a space where you can bring whatever is important to you, without fear of judgement, and feel welcomed exactly as you are.

Change is possible

I believe that counselling and EFT work and that they can work for you too.

No matter what you have been through, or how stuck things may feel, I believe new possibilities can emerge. Sometimes we simply need the right support, understanding and tools to help us move towards them.

You remain in control

You are the expert on your own life.

My role is not to tell you what to think, feel or do, but to support you in exploring what feels right for you. I respect your autonomy and your right to make your own choices, and I will work at a pace that feels manageable and appropriate for you.

Working Together

Counselling and EFT are collaborative.

Together, we can explore whatever is troubling you with curiosity, compassion and care. I bring the knowledge and skills I have gained through my training and experience, while you bring your own unique experiences, insights and understanding of yourself.

Creating Safety

Safety, acceptance and stability are at the heart of how I work.

Our sense of safety shapes how we experience ourselves, other people and the world around us. If we have spent a long time feeling stressed, overwhelmed or disconnected, we may not even realise how much of our energy is devoted to simply getting by.

Together, we can work to establish a greater sense of safety and stability, creating space for new possibilities, growth and meaningful change.

Understanding yourself differently

The more we understand about ourselves and the experiences that have shaped us, the more choice we have in how we respond to life.

I see counselling and EFT as tools that can help you develop that understanding, creating greater freedom to decide how you want to live, relate to others and respond to the challenges you face.

Therapeutic Approaches -

  • A trauma informed approach that prioritises safety, trust and empowerment.
  • A relational way of working which focuses on the development of an authentic and supportive relationship.
  • Nature Connection - you can read more about this here.
  • Mindfulness - through awareness and acceptance mindfulness techniques can support us in developing self-compassion, reduce stress and foster a deeper connection to ourselves, others and the wider-world.
  • Existential philosophy, spirituality and meaning.
  • Somatic and movement based practices - I believe experiences are stored in the body as much as they are stored in the mind and that movement and body-based practices can be a powerful way to work through psychological tensions.
  • Creative work - We may use drawing, clay, metaphor or guided imagery if you choose to.
  • ‘Parts work’ - Parts work is based on the idea that individuals have different parts of themselves and that those parts can be in conflict. I find it can sometimes be useful to use the language of parts work to facilitate a deeper exploration of your internal experience.
  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) aka ‘tapping’. Tapping is an evidence based method for supporting your nervous system to help reduce stress, anxiety, trauma, pain, and other emotional or physical issues. If you want to, we can use EFT as a complementary tool to support you in your counselling journey. You can read more about the standalone EFT sessions and packages I offer here.
  • The ‘Power, Threat, Meaning Framework’ (PTMF) - the PTMF is a model for understanding psychological distress that is non-pathologising. This means it does not look through the lens of mental ‘illness’, or see emotional difficulties as disorders or flaws. Instead it sees them as understandable responses to the environment, relationships, or past experiences. It asks the question “what has happened to you?” rather than “what is wrong with you?”
