Neurodiversity-affirming Therapy

As a neurodivergent therapist (ADHD), I particularly welcome autistic and ADHD clients, whether formally diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or beginning to wonder whether neurodivergence might be part of their experience.

A neurodiversity-affirming approach recognises autism and ADHD as different neurotypes and part of normal human variation. We can explore both the strengths that can come with neurodivergence and the very real difficulties of living in a world that isn't designed with neurodivergent people in mind.

I aim to offer a space where you are welcome to be yourself and explore what you need to feel comfortable. You don't have to make eye contact or sit still, you're welcome to doodle, fidget, stim, play lego or move about.

People think, process and communicate in different ways. You may prefer more time to think, a slower pace, direct questions, diagrams, making notes or drawing things out. If it helps you feel comfortable, safe and accepted then it's welcome.

An important part of this work can be getting to know and trust your own needs and feeling more confident asking for the things that help you. For people who have spent years masking or trying to fit expectations that don't suit them, this is a space where we can build a more accepting and positive understanding of who you are.

Lived experience and understanding

Alongside my professional training as a therapist, I have lived experience of neurodivergence. I was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood and I am also the parent of an autistic child.

This has given me personal and cultural familiarity with neurodivergence, but I also know that every person who has autism or ADHD person is different. I won't assume that my experience, or my family's experience, is the same as yours, but I do understand some of the difficulties that come with sometimes being a square peg that has been forced to try to fit in a round hole!
